Signs that Indicates a Battery Replacement

Battery is literally the lifeblood of the vehicle. It is integral to start an engine and also powers up all the electrical components. A fully operational battery plays an important role in any vehicle.

Starting the ignition gives signal to the battery that kicks off a chemical reaction inside the black box. This creates electrical energy that makes the motor running and engine cranking. A dead battery indicates flicking lights but not able to turn the engine on.

Sometime, we are running out of time and car won’t turn on. This troublesome situation can be prevented by keeping a check on battery and saving your precious time. Without proper maintenance, the battery may die suddenly and make you stranded anywhere. You may avoid this situation by early identification of a few warning signs.

Typically, batteries die slowly and give some indication too.So, if you don’t want to get stranded then keep an eye on few signs.Read on to know more about some common signs.

Old Battery

If the battery is more than 3-5 years old then be sure that it has reached its end as they have a limited life. Although, some factors like climate, repeated cycles of discharging during starts affect the lifespan of the battery still it can’t work for more than five years. So,opt for replacement if you find it too old.

Slow to Start

Another sign of inefficient battery is difficult to start the vehicle. A slow engine crank or a sluggish whirring sound gives us a warning sign to get the battery tested or replaced.

Cranks but Won’t Start

While starting, the vehicle may crank or click but it won’t be able to start. In this case, you may try to jump start it but better to get the battery tested.

Dimming Lights and Electrical Issues

All the electronics ranging from dash lights to music system get the power from the battery. Dimming or no dash lights indicates discharging of the battery as it fails to supply power to all the electronic components in the vehicle.

Corroded Connectors

The formation of a white, ashy substance on the metal parts of the battery indicates a corrosion issue. The presence of corroded terminals –the positive and negative connections on the battery top creates voltage issues and creates trouble to give an ignition.

A Foul Smell

Any foul smell indicates damage to the battery or an internal shot due to gas leakage. This should be taken care of as soon as possible to avoid any mishap and better to replace the battery in such cases.

 A Misshapen Battery Case

Exposure to extreme hot and cold climatic conditions affects the lifespan of the battery and makes it crack or swell. The wild climate of the prairies affects the battery efficiency.

 Corroded Connectors

The formation of a white, ashy substance on the metal parts of the battery indicates a corrosion issue. The presence of corroded terminals –the positive and negative connections on the battery top creates voltage issues and creates trouble to give an ignition.

Whenever you purchase a new battery for your vehicle, it will come fully charged. So, if your battery is unable to hold its charge, it’s probably time to get a new car battery.
